MedDietGuy In The Numbers

Here's where two of my greatest passions meet: The Mediterranean Diet and... Stats! These numbers and figures will illustrate the time annd place we are currently in when it comes to healthy eating and dieting and hopefully shed some light on where we are headed and how we should adjust. They're all derived from articles, videos, documentaries and conversations I've had the chance to experience, and come from the most reliable and reputable sources in the world of food. In an attempt to avoid sounding preachy, I will leave the numbers alone and not interpret them; they speak for themselves. I hope you enjoy these enlightening facts!

1. Between 1950-2000, the world's population doubled. The world's meat consumption grew x5!

2. 20 years ago the average American spent 10% of income on healthcare and 17% on food. Today, the numbers are flipped: 17% on healthcare and 10% on food.

3. 1/3 of American women and a 1/4 of American men are on a diet, at any given time. The success rate: 2/3 of dieters end up with more weight than what they started with.

4. In 1972 Nixon declared a war on cancer, spending roughly $39 billion on research. That same year, 220,000 Americans died of cancer. 25 years later, 560,000 Americans died of cancer.

5. The American Heart Association defines the ideal cardiovascular health based on 7 factors:

a. Optimal cholesterol levels.
b. Normal blood pressure.
c. No diabetes.
d. Lean BMI (body mass index).
e. No smoking.
f. Physically active.
g. Healthy diet.

Currently in the U.S., only 1% of the population meet the definition for all 7.

Till next time! Healthy and delicious eating, everyone!
